| In the classic
screwball comedy Boy Meets Girl, James Cagney and Pat O'Brien are a couple of hack
Hollywood screenwriters who explain that all movies, but especially romantic comedies, can
basically be summed up with this phrase: "Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy finds
girl." If only it was really that easy. The best romantic comedies always put as many obstacles between
two people as possible. Sometimes it's actual physical distance, as in Sleepless in
Seattle, or maybe it's something actually physical, as occurred when poor Dustin Hoffman
in Tootsie found his true love while dressed as a woman.
But no matter what the problems, the lovers
usually have a lot of things to work out before they can live happily ever after. Just
like in real life. Although, in some cases, happily ever after is not even the answer.
Sometimes, that's just the beginning.
