One of Hollywood's most versatile and
enduring leading men, Cary Grant was born in Bristol, England with the unassuming name
Archie Leach. At the
tender age of 14, Grant left home, joined a comedic troupe, and toured England. He came
across the sea to America and after a couple of successful years working in vaudeville,
landed his first noticeable role at the behest of Mae West, who demanded he play opposite
her in She Done Him Wrong.
Fifty-three years and more than 50
films later, Grant left an incredible legacy of memorable movie roles. A favorite actor
for many directors, including Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks, Grant could easily switch
from serious to comic roles without blinking an eye. That said, his amazing timing, sly
charm and ability to make any woman swoon clearly made him the most romantic of all comedy
stars. |
The Awful
Truth (1937)
What's so awful is that it takes Grant
and Irene Dunne so long to figure out how much they love each other. It picked up six
Academy Award nominations that year and that wasn't so awful either.

Bringing Up Baby (1938)
Although you might think this is a
film about parenting, Baby is actually a 200-pound leopard. Katharine Hepburn plays a

gem.
